Earth Science Erosion

Earth Science Erosion

Coop #5 Earth Science: Erosion April 10, 2012. Brain pop videos: fast land changes and weathering. How do rivers weather rocks? Kids dropped small, pieces of rock in a large water jar and shook it around for a while. Later, the rocks were poured out and compared to the originals. Rocks in rivers and streams are weathered by water and movement. Wind erosion: Blown air with straw over flour and rice trying to "carve" gullies and valleys with the air. Looked at pictures of wind effect on rocks. Water erosion: Covered one side of a pan with sand and water on the other creating a "beach." Made waves by slowly moving the pan sides to sides. This displacement of sand is an example of erosion. Sprayed water over sand to see another example of water erosion. Mechanical weathering: broke down an antacid tablet on the table with rocks then dropped the tablets in water and observed the Chemical weathering (oxidation of iron and carbon dioxide from air combines with water to form carboni! c acid); also had an example of chemical weathering rock.) Grand Canyon: Looked at Google earth grand canyon pictures. Recreated a model of the Grand Canyon (sedimentary) and poured the Colorado river on and looked at the formations. Water expansion: showed 2 identical containers one with frozen water and one with temperature water to see the difference. Glacier Erosion: Pressed an ice cube against the flat surface of modeling clay and moved it back and forth several times and observed. Then the ice ...
